September 2012 Beauty Favorites

It kind of occurred to me that I've never done a monthly favorites post on this blog so I figured it's about time I did one! I wish I had individual pictures and swatches for all of these products but unfortunately my camera has been acting up lately and all of my pictures are coming out blurry and overexposed. As soon as that's sorted out, hopefully I'll have some more detailed posts for you guys! I'm going to use stock images for now (which sucks, I know!).

Maybelline Color Tattoo in Tough as Taupe: I've been trying to slowly transition out of warm colors this month, and this eyeshadow has really been helping. It does look pretty brown in the above picture, but when it's swatched it's undoubtedly more on the grey side. Because it has that slight brown tinge, I've been blending it out with cool-toned brown colors and the effect is really nice. Hopefully I'll start using true greys and silvers using this as a base color soon!

Bailey Powder Foundation Duo in Medium: This is the first product I've hit pan on! (Yay!) I've been using this product since I got it in this year's March Glossybox and I love it. I use a light dusting of this over my liquid foundation as a setting powder and it's been working out great for me. (If anyone has an idea of where I can re-purchase this, please let me know!)

Revlon Colorstay Nail Polish in Rain Forest: This has been my favorite nail polish this month! I have a full post on this HERE if you would like to know more.
L'Oreal Color Riche Balm in Tender Mauve: I've been having a love-hate relationship with this product all month, but I kept going back to it. The finish is slightly sheerer than I hoped it would be, but the color is definitely buildable. This is great if you have more orange-red toned lips and you want to counter balance those tones. Overall, it's pretty moisturizing, but it feels a little excessive and greasy after re-application. But, generally, it's a decent product and I like the way it makes my lips look. It has SPF in it too which is nice, and it makes it smell like sunscreen (which I like!).

Coastal Scents Smokey Palette: My last two posts have been about this product so feel free to scroll down and read more about it! I've been having a lot of fun experimented with this palette this month!

MAC Prism Blush: This is just generally one of my favorite blushes ever. It's a sheertone finish so it gives a really subtle hint of color on the cheeks. It was actually my mom's favorite when she was my age so I think it's a really timeless, classic shade.
Sigma F84 Angled Kabuki: I've been adoring this brush for applying foundation lately. It's really a lifesaver. You can read my full review HERE.

MAC 134 Powder Brush: I tend to go back and forth with which powder brushes I use, but this month I've been loving my MAC 134 brush. I've had it for about 2 years and it seriously gets the job done. I use this brush to apply my Bailey powder and covers my entire face instantly. To be honest, I can't really justify how much I paid for this brush... But I genuinely do love it.

Sigma E40 Tapered Blending Brush: So after hearing the entire YouTube beauty community rave about this product, I figured it was finally time to test it out for myself. You can read my full review HERE.

And that concludes my first monthly favorites post! I'll probably post non-beauty favorites in a few days, so stay tuned for that :)

EOTD ft. Coastal Scents Smokey Palette

As a continuation of yesterday's post, here is a look I created using the Coastal Scents Smokey Palette! I called it a fall smokey eye because I basically just experimented with fall colors.

I'll quickly go through the steps I used to achieve this look in case you want to recreate it :) I should also say that the colors were more vibrant in person and these pictures are kinda overexposed (I have to learn how to fix that lol...)

So the first thing I did was primed my lid with Urban Decay primer potion (you can use any primer you own). Then:

1) I used this red/cranberry color as an all-over lid color*

2) I put this dark black-red in the outer third of the eye and crease (which accounts for the smokey effect)*

3) Because I don't own brown eyeliner and I thought black would be too harsh, I dipped a liner brush in water and mixed it with this dark matte brown shade and then dragged it over my upper lashline (ideally, you should use a brown pencil liner and then smudge it out)

4) Drag a bit of this matte green on the lower lashline, and then smudge it a little with the brown used in step 3. I also used my Shiseido eyeliner in green on my waterline.

5) One thing that bummed me out about this palette was the lack of true gold colors! I didn't want to use  yellow because I thought it would clash, so I pulled out my Naked palette and went for Half Baked, which I popped in the inner corner

6) To make the inner corner sort of "connect" with the rest of the look, I used a tiny bit of this shimmery pumpkin color and brushed it upwards into the red/cranberry

7) Apply mascara! :)

* Make sure to blend out every step as you go. A great brush for that is the Sigma E40 Tapered Blending brush (which I reviewed HERE and you can go ahead and purchase HERE).

Hope you enjoyed this! Let me know in the comments if you find these "tutorial" type posts helpful :)

Coastal Scents Smokey Palette: Review and Swatches

Hey everyone! About a month ago I won PasionStarButterfly's Coastal Scents Smokey Palette giveaway, so I thought it was about time to get some use out of it, swatch it, and review it for you guys!

The palette comes with 36 shimmery and matte colors. I love the incredible variety of colors in this palette, but at the same time, there are always two or three colors within the same color family which makes it relatively easy to pick and choose eyeshadow looks. Of course, you can go nuts and mix totally different colors, but I like how there are enough options within the same color range.

Honestly, I didn't expect to enjoy this palette as much as I do because it's relatively affordable ($19.95), so I was weary about the quality of the shadows. The good news is that I am very pleased! As usually is the case, the shimmery shadows are quite a bit more pigmented than the matte ones, but that was to be expected. The matte shades are a little chalky for my liking, but hey.

The packaging does feel a little cheap and I found the palette hard to open at first, but in the end it doesn't really matter. Most of the colors work great and are very smooth, so I would definitely recommend purchasing this palette because it's so versatile.

Alright, on with the swatches!

I also thought you guys should know which ones out of the whole palette are my four favorites, so I did proper swatches of those. I think these colors are the most pigmented and velvety which is why I picked them!

I hope you enjoyed this post! This is my first time swatching and reviewing so if you have any tips for me, please let me know in the comments. Also, tomorrow I will be posting an EOTD featuring some of these shades, so look out for that! :)

New Sigma Brushes and EOTD!

Hey everyone! I finally purchased the last two brushes I thought were missing from my brush collection: a dense kabuki for liquid foundation, and a tapered blending brush for eyeshadow. I was debating between which brush companies to buy from, so I did some research and finally settled on Sigma... Best. Decision. Ever.

I'm sure you all know tons about Sigma, but I want to quickly stress the quality of these brushes. I've shelled out $50+ on individual MAC brushes, and now I see how ridiculous that was. Sigma brushes are extremely comparable to my MAC brushes, and only a fraction of the cost.

F84 Angled Kabuki: This is a very dense angle kabuki brush that I use for liquid foundation. It applies makeup like a dream. Because the brush is so dense, the makeup won't seep in the bottom/brown part of the brush, making it easier to clean as well. I chose the angled kabuki as opposed to the round or flat top one because I thought it would be easier to manipulate around my face. I feel like the round or flat top one would be more suited for powders, but that's just my opinion. One thing to keep in mind about this brush is that it MUST be spot-cleaned in between washes, otherwise the foundation will dry onto the bristles and leave your makeup streaky.

E40 Tapered Blending: I have literally heard every beauty guru rave about this brush, and now I know why. It's the fluffiest brush I have ever owned and it makes blending SO easy. With a light hand, I gently swipe the edges of my eyeshadow a few times, and voila. All blended. I don't have to sit there for 5 minutes trying to smoke out my eyeshadow anymore. A few swipes with this brush and the job is done.

I apologize for not getting better pictures lol but as you can see, it blends all my dark shadows extremely well.

If you would like to purchase the brushes I talked about, I'm going to leave the links below. Again, I can't recommend these brushes enough!

Also, from now until October 31st, Sigma is giving purchases of $30+ this exclusive gift: their brow powder in the shade Scarlett. If you were eyeing their brow design kit, this is a great way to sample it.

Let me know what you guys think of Sigma brushes in the comments below! Would you be interested in trying them out?

NOTD: September 22nd, 2012

So today I have a quick NOTD for you guys with a nail polish that I picked up while I was on vacation in Italy. If you ever find yourself in Italy and want to pick up some Italian brands, I highly recommend this one. I got this nail polish and a liquid liner from them, and I adore both of them. The brand is also relatively cheap and is sold in Italian beauty shops (or "profumeria").

As you can see this is a very deep raspberry color. I think it's the perfect shade for fall and the formulation is just something else. This is by far the best formulation nail polish I have ever used. It's a "gel effect" polish meaning it goes on really thick and shiny. Honestly, I could have done with just one coat. It also dries in like, record time. I can't recommend this enough! OH, and I almost forgot to mention the brush size. The brush is "XL" and it literally only takes two swipes to cover your entire nail. Amazing.

Have you tried any Bella Oggi products?

LUSH "Rub, Rub, Rub" & "Ocean Salt" Exfoliators

Hey everyone! Guess who finally got new batteries for her camera?! Ahhh, I'm so excited that I can finally start posting properly again. So without further ado...

If you're a regular reader of mine, you'll know I have a love-hate relationship with LUSH. For the longest time, I just couldn't seem to find a product of theirs that I was absolutely in love with, and their prices are just too high, and their stuff expires, and ugh... But, despite that, for some inexplicable reason, I get sucked into that store every time I'm in the mall...?! I don't know how it happens. I really don't.

Anyway, I wanted to find an exfoliator for my legs that I could use before shaving to prevent ingrown hairs (TMI?). The lady working at Lush explained that Rub, Rub, Rub (called "Lavez, Lavez" in French) would do the trick and that, she "[doesn't] know how it happens, but it makes your hairs stand up!" Okay. Fine. I picked up a sample. (By the way, I was really impressed with the sample size... She gave me like, half a tub)

I got about 4-5 uses of the sample so I feel like I'm qualified to review this product. Do I still have ingrown hairs? Yeah. Less than before, but yeah. So that part was kind of "meh". However, after I use Rub, Rub, Rub, my legs are so. freaking. smooth. It's amazing. Long story short, I went back to Lush yesterday and picked up the full-size tub, and much to my surprise, it was only $19. I thought that was pretty reasonable considering their baby containers usually retail for around that much. Also, I want to quickly mention the scent of this thing... It smells like mimosas. So delicious. They sell a bathbomb with the same scent so I'm gonna have to try that too.

The last thing I'd like to talk about is this sample of their facial exfoliator "Ocean Salt". I may even prefer this one to "Rub, Rub, Rub". It's supposed to minimize pores and it makes your skin SO soft! It leaves the face feeling very tight which some people might not like, but I love it. I find this one a lot grittier so I'm sure it could be used on the body as well, the only downside is that this is more expensive than Rub, Rub, Rub (like, $34 for a tub...).

The active ingredient in Ocean Salt is the vodka which accounts for the "tightening" effect. Also, it smells like margaritas. So yummy. I'm gonna do a follow-up to this post and show you guys some before-and-afters so we can see if it did minimize my pores or not.

Have you tried either of these products before? What do you think? What's your experience with LUSH products?

Beauty VS. Brains TAG

Katie over at KatieGolightlyX did this tag and I had a lot of fun reading it and getting to know her! I'm aware that this is an incredibly wordy post, but hopefully it doesn't bore you too much :)

1. What is your favorite book?
My favorite book of all-time is called "An Abundance of Katherines" by the wonderfully talented John Green. This is where my blog name came from ;) It's a really clever, witty story about a kid who only dates girls named Katherine. It sounds like a pretty insignificant plotline, but John's writing is so clever and smart and flawless. I used to want to be a writer and he was definitely my biggest inspiration, so I would seriously recommend any book by him (I've read all of them and so have my friends because I told them too lol!).

2. What is your favorite quote?
I'm sure there more insightful quotes out there, but one that has been extra meaningful for me is "It'll all be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end." I've told myself this through many a painful time, whether it be during emotional hardship or even like, enduring the pain of getting my eyebrows done. It's pretty effective.

3. Do you prefer English or Math?
English! Like I mentioned previously, I wanted to be a writer so English class was definitely a bigger influence in my life. I can't say I hate math, because I liked the challenge of it (and finally mastering something in math might be the best feeling in the world), but I have always excelled more at English, which is naturally why I enjoy it more.

4. Do you prefer Science or Art?
Personally and in terms of my own practice and future career, art. But, that's not to say I condemn science or anything. I love the idea that art and science can coexist in our world. As for my career though, I think art really pushes the limits of my intellect, in that my ideas and creative energy are always changing, and I love seeing a vision of mine come to be. I studied science up until 10th grade and while I got good grades, nothing pushed my limits like art and English did.

5. Name five albums or artists that have changed your life.
This is really tough for me because music is not something I've been consistently passionate about. Right now my interests lie in blogging and beauty rather than discovering new artists, for example. But let me throw a few names out there: John Mayer, Taylor Swift, The Who, Aerosmith and lastly, the Jonas Brothers. These boys were my longest-lasting musical obsession and I can't even explain why right now, but they took up every moment of my life aged 14-17. I don't listen to their music anymore, but their tastes are what got me listening to the likes of John Mayer, Elvis Costello, etc. And now that I think of it, I've seen every single one of these bands/artists in person! Let me insert a few photos:

(I didn't take photos at Aerosmith because I was way too far from the stage, and my photos of the Who are on my cell and the quality sucks lol!)

6. What were your favorite and least favorite subjects in school?
Looking back on my college experience (I was in a Liberal Arts program), my favorite course was Eastern Religions. The reason for this is probably because my professor was the most insightful, level-headed, eloquent lady I have ever met. She really opened my eyes, and I know one day I will open up my Eastern Religions notes (which I copied down word-for-word), and regain my appreciation for this class. My least-favorite class had to be Just & Unjust Wars. It was a class filled with politics and overly-opinionated students trying to outsmart each other... :)

7. Who is your favorite celebrity with a brain?
Meh, I don't really like this question because celebrities aren't just glorified puppets, they do have working brains like the rest of us. But I think I'll go with Emma Stone for this one. I'm not sure if she's book-smart or anything, but I think she picks out brilliant roles for herself and from what I've seen, she's very witty. I wish I had a better answer for this!

8. What is your nerdy little secret?
I enjoy watching Vi Hart's videos on YouTube every once in a while.

9. What beauty gurus do you admire for more than their love of beauty/fashion?
This one goes to Louise Sprinkle of Glitter, without a doubt. I just think she is a very lovely person, and I agree with most of her non-beauty related opinions. I think she's very wise, well-spoken, and I always feel a little enriched after watching one of her more chatty videos. Lucky for me, she's just started a channel called Sprinkle of Chatter ;) Check it out! Ohhh, and she also did this tag as a video on her beauty channel so you should also check that out!

10. If you could study anything, anywhere what would it be?
If I could make a viable living off of painting and such kinds of studio art, I would definitely study that either somewhere in Europe, or at NYU.

11. If your blog couldn't focus on beauty/fashion, what would it focus on?
It would probably just be a diary/lifestyle blog of sorts, relaying my life's boring tidbits. Although, I guess it kind of is one already lol! Or actually, I would dedicate a blog solely to movies and television, as I watch a loottt of that.

12. Name something that you're obsessed with but others might find nerdy or strange.
Candles! My friends think I'm obsessive and weird (but then they all love the way my room smells. Ha!).

13. Name five people (excluding family/friends) that inspire you.

  1. My aforementioned religion teacher for the aforementioned reasons (I don't really put her in the friend/family category so I'm counting this hehe)
  2. John Green because I think he's a brilliant writer and all-around person
  3. Judd Apatow because I think he has the best sense of humor a director has ever had. Most of his films are hits for me (except none with Will Ferrell because I dislike Will Ferrell immensely, but that's not Judd's fault).
  4. Can I include fictional characters? Dean Moriarty (On the Road) and Alaska Young (Looking For Alaska)
  5. And then I guess I would mention some YouTubers that I love watching (FleurdeForce, MissGlamorazzi, DailyGrace, etc)
14. Who is your intellectual soulmate?
Hmm, I don't think I've found my intellectual soulmate yet. I'd like to think my regular, spend-the-rest-of-my-life-with soulmate will be my intellectual soulmate as well. So, no one until then!

Hope you guys enjoyed reading this! It's been in my drafts for long enough lol! If you did enjoy it, drop a comment saying so, and definitely do the tag for yourself and link back because I would love to read it :)

Yesterday's OOTD/FOTD & Updates (Sept 14)

So, I'm bummed. I haven't been blogging as much as I'd like to... I have tons and tons of ideas for posts but just not enough time to carry them out. I think the only solution is to organize my time better. I started school and my part-time job again, so I need to manage school, homework, work, and blogging, and unfortunately university and work take precedence.

Anyhow, yesterday was my friend Tania's birthday so we all went out for dinner and karaoke at a Korean karaoke place (and yes, Gangnam Style was sung & danced). It's honestly one of the most fun things you could do in Montreal, in my opinion. Basically you reserve a private room and you have thousands of song options, and you can order alcohol whenever you like (just press the red button beside the door and your waitress shows up). The only downside was that it was a billion degrees because their AC was down, but it's all good. I much prefer this as opposed to clubbing or something, because you're with your friends and no one's there to bother you/creep on you (can you tell how anti-social I am?). Some highlights: I Will Survive, You Give Love a Bad Name, and Gangnam Style of course.

I'll end by quickly running through my OOTD & FOTD (I'm in the middle-left).

  • Floral skirt: Forever 21
  • Black tank: Forever 21
  • Orange silk shirt: Michael Kors
  • Flats: Michael Kors (see my This or That Beauty Tag for more info)
Face:
  • Urban Decay De Slick (sprayed before and after makeup)
  • Physician's Formula concealer stick in Light
  • Marcelle foundation in True Beige
  • Bailey Foundation Duo in Medium (as a setting powder)
  • NYC Sunny Bronzer (to contour)
  • MAC Pinch 'o' Peach blush
Eyes:
  • Urban Decay primer potion in Sin
  • Urban Decay Toasted on entire lid
  • Urban Decay Chopper on outer third & lower lashline
  • Urban Decay Sin on inner third
  • Bella Oggi Deep Intense liquid liner in Extra Black
  • Rimmel Soft Kohl liner in Jet Black (on water line)
Lips:
  • Rimmel London Lasting Finish lipstick in Balistic
  • Korres Lip Butter in Wild Rose over top
Hair:
  • Herbal Essences volumizing mousse on semi-wet hair
  • Hot Tools 1-inch curling iron, hold each strand for 15 seconds
  • Sebastian Re-Shaper Strong Hold hairspray
...It takes a lot of time and patience to look good, doesn't it...

NOTD: September 13th, 2012

Hello everyone! I have a really quick NOTD for you today. I haven't done one of these in a little while because I was letting my nails grow out and "breathe" for the past 2-3 days. I decided to go nude/neutral today because I love the elegance of pale pink or beige nail polish.

Also, let me just quickly apologize for the terrible quality of this photo! My camera ran out of battery and I haven't had a chance to go pick up a new pack of AAs lol!

But anyway, as I was saying, this is a very elegant look and I would honestly pick this over a French manicure any day. I think it's perfect for formal occasions and it looks super crisp and clean. Oh and this one is from Kiko Makeup Milano (again, sorry for having so may Kiko polishes!).

Hope you enjoyed!

OOTD: Fall Weather

Fall is finally here!!! I'm so happy. No more muggy, sweaty days. I took the opportunity to bring out my military jacket and studded ankle combat boots.

I got the military jacket from Aritzia in Soho, but the brand is actually TNA. The red and blue pattern top is from Michael Kors, and it's actually a sheer summer top, but layered with the military jacket makes it more "fall" I think. Oh, if you're interested, the cami I'm wearing underneath is navy blue & from Forever 21 (as are my jeans). The combat boots are from Michael Kors as well. The leather hair bow-tie is from Italy (the same place I got the bracelets for my giveaway!).

If you're wondering why so much of my wardrobe is Michael Kors, that's because I worked for them for a couple days during their sale this summer so I managed to pick up quite a few things! I'm not sponsored by MK in any way (imagine?! hahaha).

Oh and I'm sorry that this photo is kinda blurry--I'm still working on using a self-timer effectively!

Liebster Blog Award

I've been nominated for a Liebster Award a couple times, and I've seen them on countless blogs... But the concept always confused me, for some reason. If everyone's nominated, then who wins? And more importantly, who decides who wins? I searched the net for a little while and couldn't find any substantial answers, but I decided I would give it a go anyway. Why not.

I was nominated by Rosie at Gorgeously Glowing as well as by Glossy, so I'm going to answer both of their sets of questions!

There are rules that must be followed, so here they are:

  1. Each person tagged must post 11 things about themselves
  2. They must also answer the 11 questions the tagger has set for them
  3. They must create 11 more questions to ask bloggers they have decided to tag
  4. They must then choose 11 bloggers to tag with less than 200 followers
  5. These lucky bloggers must be told
  6. There are no tag backs
Here are 11 facts about me:

Here are the questions from Rosie at Gorgeously Glowing :)

1) If you could do anything you wanted in the world, what would you do?
I would move to California because it's the most comfortable, inspiring, and exciting place I've ever traveled to.

2) What is your most greatest achievement?
My greatest achievement would be getting my college diploma because it was a ton of work and sometimes I really felt like giving up. (Glad I didn't!)

3) If you were stuck on a deserted island, what two things would you want with you?
I'm gonna be practical here and say I'd want a knife and a pack of matches lol!

4) What is one beauty product that you cannot live without?
I'll have to say mascara.

5) If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
California, like I said before.

6) If you could go on a date with anyone, who would it be and why?
Hmmm, like celebrity-wise? I guess it would be Ed Sheeran because he seems the most down-to-earth of all the singers/actors I like. I totally would have picked a Jonas Brother before watching Married to Jonas but now they all seem like assholes lol.

7) If a fashion designer came to you and wanted to give a brand new full wardrobe for free, what designer would it be?
I don’t really wear/lust after designer clothes but I’ll say… Whoever picks the merchandise for LF stores haha.

8) What celebrity style is most like your style?
I’m gonna say Selena Gomez because I think she has great fashion sense, but you can see that some days she just can’t be bothered and wears really basic outfits.

9) What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
I don’t feel guilty about any of my pleasures but I suppose it would be enjoying Here Comes Honey Boo Boo way too much LOL.

10) If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be?
I wish I cared less/things didn't affect me so much.

11) If you were awarded a free shopping spree with a cosmetic company, what company would it be?
MAC! I don’t own many things from MAC but I browse their online store like 24/7 so it would be nice :)

Summer Movie Post #4

It's been a while since I talked about movies and I felt like this was a little overdue (considering it is now September and I still have to blog about 10-11 movies that I watched during the summer! Ahh! So behind!). I better get into it right away, then!

In case you missed the previous posts...

13) The Artist: I saw this movie on the plane ride to Italy and I absolutely loved it. I admit it was a little slow at the beginning, but I found myself more and more enthralled as it went on. It's the first silent movie I've ever seen in full, so that's pretty cool. It's a really lighthearted film and Jean Dujardin is so charming and just, yeah, this movie made me happy. Also, the dog in it stole my heart because I'm a sucker.

Verdict: I can see why this won so many awards! Really sweet.

14) My Week With Marilyn: I actually saw this movie on the way back from Italy haha! I also enjoyed it quite a lot. I honestly have no knowledge of Marilyn Monroe's work (like, aside from the white dress and mole), and admittedly this movie made me curious to see some of her films. If Williams' portrayal was an honest one, I can finally understand the appeal of Marilyn Monroe. What an intriguing woman--really full of life.

Verdict: Definitely worth the watch. I was engaged the whole way through.

15) LOL: I'm not going to give this movie five stars or anything, but I have to say I liked it. I'm probably super biased because I'm a big Miley Cyrus fan, but this movie is your classic casual chick flic. Anyone who takes her performance/the concept of the film seriously is incredibly misguided. If you go into this expecting to be blown away, you've got the wrong film. I suggest to watch it with an open mind and give Miley a chance. Anyone who says it's "the worst movie they've ever seen"... Please get over yourself :)

Verdict: Miley haters will hate this but I thought it was a generally fun movie to watch.

16) The Shawshank Redemption: FINALLY. The movie of the summer. The movie I've been waiting for all my life (no, seriously). What a great message and what a performance by all the actors. I love clever, intelligent movies that carry a moral without coming off as too preachy. This is my all-time movie recommendation.

Verdict: It's #1 on IMDB for a reason. Don't hesitate.
